Avo Cigars - Birth and Development

Who started Avo Cigars? Avo Uvezian.

Back in the day, Uvezian had a close acquaintance in Geneva who introduced him to Henrik Kelner. Kelner had recently inaugurated his own cigar factory in the Dominican Republic, after garnering several years of experience with a government tobacco company. In 1987, Uvezian's debut cigars, crafted with Kelner's expertise, hit the market under the Bolero label in San Juan, eventually being sold as Avo in New York City. This high-end brand was originally conceived to grace the shelves of the prestigious Davidoff shop. 

The ushers of Avo in the United States came in 1988. The brand was somewhat a trendsetter of the era. It embodied the quintessence of a full-bodied blend, masterfully paired with a selection of Connecticut shade wrappers that came in numerous shades from ‘Claro’ to ‘Colorado’. Moreover, the cigars came beautifully encased in a cedar cabinet-style box and free of cellophane. Making a unique statement was the packaging itself, featuring avant-garde original artwork.

Avo Uvezian had to rename his cigar line to Avo, due to a naming conflict with another cigar manufacturer already owning rights to the name Bolero. The design for Avo's cigar packaging was influenced by the aesthetic of the cigars made for Knockando single malt whisky and Absolut Vodka.

Even today, there's a slight resemblance between Avo's packaging and the design of the now-discontinued Knockando cigar brand. Uvezian had developed a strong friendship with Michel Roux, the marketing guru for Absolut in the United States. Roux was instrumental in encouraging Uvezian to focus on creating a premium product for the high-end consumer. Roux's advice was simple, yet powerful: strive to deliver the highest quality product, choose eye-catching packaging, and pay your supplier generously and fairly.

The triumph of the brand attests to Uvezian's successful execution of his plan. Even though many premium cigar brands have seen rapid growth in the U.S. market, very few can rival the exponential expansion of Avo. This brand emerged as one of the first boutique premium brands to become a colossal success story at the onset of the cigar boom in the U.S. From an initial production of approximately 5,000 cigars in 1987, Uvezian was able to achieve a surprising number of 3.2 million cigars in 1997. Surely, a commendable achievement for ten years of diligent work. By this time, Avo already had the recognition and the position of being among the best.

The AVO Regional East Edition is a medium-bodied cigar handmade in the Dominican Republic at the Cigars Davidoff factory. This East Coast-exclusive features an Ecuadorian wrapper, Dominican binder and Dominican/Nicaraguan fillers. AVO Syncro Nicaragua is AVO​’s first box-pressed cigar, and the first in its portfolio to use nutrient-rich tobacco from the black volcanic soils of Ometepe, Nicaragua.
